Oh the excitment of parenthood

Or should I say FEAR
This is how our night started.
A costume birthday party for a friend's son.
And this is how it ended!
A slumber party at Antelope Valley Hospital
I forgot that our friends had dogs so when we arrived I already knew we would end up having to leave early because Holden is allergic to dogs and usually has an asthma attack when he is around them but I thought we'd be able to make it more than an hour. As soon as he started coughing I gave him an antihistamine and took him outside to get some fresh air and he was doing better and went back in but then fifteen minuets later he was wheezing pretty bad and saying his costume was choking him and I knew it was time to go. I took him outside to sit down and breath the fresh air and went back into the house to let Billy know it was time to go and to get Ashlynn. Here comes the scary part, from the time it took us to get from the front door to our car parked directly across the street he had the scariest look on his face and was grabbing for me and he couldn't breathe My only reaction was to throw him into the car and rush him to urgent care, we have been through this with Holden every year now for the past four years but it is normally an asthma attack that can be taken care of with breathing treatments and some steroids, but this time was different, on the way there I helped him calm down and he started breathing a little better thank goodness, but after ten minuets in the urgent care he wasn't getting any better so they called for an Ambulance, Holden and I got to take our very first Ambulance ride. It turns out He was having a severe allergic reaction and his throat had swollen up, which is why he wasn't getting better at urgent care, thankfully the paramedics knew what they were doing and treated him the correct way and were way nicer and more sensitive to Holden's needs and more comforting to him than the doctor at Kaiser who saw him for five minuets. The doctors in the emergency room were also so nice to both Holden and Me, they told both of us everything they were doing and constantly were talking to him in a nice calm voice so he wouldn't be afraid of them, they were amazing and I'm so grateful to them and the paramedics. After an hour in the ER he was able to finally breath better and got a room so he could sleep a little bit and get some much needed oxygen. As soon as they had a room available up in the pediatric unit they admitted him for observations and by morning he was breathing like a champ and eating like a machine he even got the nurses to bring him ice cream and a new toy. Now that he's home he's totally milking it, not that his Dad has ever been able to tell him No but now I'm not either "mom wouldn't it be great if you brought me breakfast on a tray in bed every morning" , "wouldn't it be cool if my bed had wheels so if I'm too tired you can just roll me to the living room", " You know I was so brave so I think I should get a new toy"
Thankfully Billy's mom was able to come to the house right away so Billy could take Ashlynn home and tuck her in bed so we had one less person to worry about, and Billy's dad was able to come to the hospital right away and gave him a blessing and was able to stay with us and keep us company.
His costume was pretty awesome, maybe I'm biased since I am indeed the one who created it, however he only wore it for an hour and a half before it had to be cut off by the paramedics, good thing we still have another week before Halloween day so I can sew up another shirt for him.
On a good note Holden has a very good attitude and pointed out the positive things about the ordeal
1. it was really cool to get to ride in the Ambulance and they turned the siren and the lights on and we got to run red lights.
2. He got served in bed and got ice cream in the morning, when he didn't like what was served for breakfast they obliged him and brought him something else(which does not happen at home)
3.He got to ride on the bed down the hallway
4. he got to have a sleepover with just mommy
5. he got to stay up late watching infomercials on TV
6. All the nurses were super nice to him, he even said that if he ever has to go to the hospital again he wants to go to that one.

We are now armed with an Epi-pen in case this ever happens again, and strict instructions to see the allergy specialist which is a good thing so we will know exactly what we need to keep him away from, and hopefully this never ever happens again!!!

  3. how scary! John has asthma, too. We have about three epipens in the house. I've never had to use one, but just having them is very comforting. You should ask about getting a nebulizer to keep at home, too. (unless you already have one) then you don't have to take him in every time he needs a breathing treatment. We've been able to avoid many doctors and possible hospital visits because of the nebulizer in combination with the comfort of always having an epipen close by. Good luck with the allergy specialist! We see one, and that's how we got the epipens and nebulizer with albuterol and xopenex. Once you're kid shows major allergies, just start asking for perscriptions for those things...
    I'm glad he's okay!

  5. Thanks everyone,
yeah Raych we have a nebulizer and albuteral it helps with his normal asthma but sometimes if he gets sick he gets respitory infections and makes his asthma untreatable at home. Did you have an epi pen at John's school last year the nurse recomended it but I don't know if I trust that sort of thing with someone who hasn't been taught how to use it properly.

  8. Breanna has an epi pen at school thank goodness she has never needed it. (yet) The doc can show you how to use it, and there are instructions in the box on how to do it too. Sounds like he should have one at school just in case, poor guy! Glad he is doing better, and love the costume!
